Adapted mountain economy
Tourism, agro-pastoralism and forest management for a resilient Pyrenees
The adapted mountain economy focuses on transforming key sectors for the resilient development of the territory: tourism, agriculture-livestock and the forestry-wood sector. The LIFE P4C project promotes transition models in ski resorts, encourages circular tourism, contributes adapted agro-silvo-pastoral practices and promotes sustainable forest management that is close to nature. All of this helps to ensure the continuity of economic activities and the maintenance of the population in mountain areas.
Sectors involved
Farming and grazing
Climate change displaces agricultural areas, reduces yields and encourages the spread of pests, increasing risks and costs in the agricultural sector.
Tourism
Climate change reduces the availability of snow in ski resorts, compromising their operations. A milder climate prolongs the mountain tourist season, diversifies activities and increases pressure on sensitive ecosystems.
Forest resources
Climate change intensifies phenomena such as heat waves, droughts and torrential rains, affecting the health of forest masses and the quality of associated resources. The increased incidence of pests and diseases exacerbates the problem.
Water resources
Changes in flow rates and reduced water retention in the cryosphere affect ecosystems and water resources at the headwaters of river courses.
Energy
Climate change presents both potential opportunities and emerging risks for hydroelectric power generation and other renewable energies. Changes in energy supply and demand induced by climate change and reduced water availability during periods of high energy demand may generate tensions between sectors.
OBJECTIVE
Promoting a sustainable and adapted Pyrenean economy
