Guidelines for local climate planning in the Pyrenees

The main objective of this guide is to help municipalities in the Pyrenees integrate climate change into their policies. To this end, it first reviews supra-municipal policies and instruments and then proposes a series of guidelines to facilitate their integration at the local level.

Guidelines for integrating climate change adaptation into forest management in the Pyrenees

Forests are multifunctional and fulfil economic roles by generating employment, resources and tourist appeal. They also play a key role in biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water regulation and the prevention of natural hazards in mountainous areas.

POCTEFA INBIOPYR sentinel species poster

The Pyrenees, a bridge between Mediterranean and Atlantic Europe, between the south and the north, are home to a wide variety of animal species. All are affected by climate change to a greater or lesser extent, although some stand out for their particular vulnerability; these are what we call sentinel species.

Report on the state of the soil in the Pyrenees

This report, written by David Badía Villas and Clara Martí Dalmau (University of Zaragoza) as part of the POCTEFA SOLPYR project, analyses the state of the soil in the Pyrenees to serve as a basis for the future cross-border action plan. It sets out the progress made, the gaps that remain and the measures to be taken to improve soil management and resilience to climate change.

Sentinel fauna and climate indicators: tools for analysing climate change in the Pyrenees

The report summarises the conclusions of the INBIOPYR project’s seminar entitled ‘Sentinel fauna and climate indicators’, which focused on the effects of climate change on biodiversity in the Pyrenees. It highlights the value of sentinel species in assessing climate impacts and confirms the high vulnerability of mountain fauna to global warming. As its main conclusion, it proposes strengthening cross-border monitoring and scientific coordination to improve the adaptation and conservation of Pyrenean ecosystems.

POCTEFA INBIOPYR Sentinel Species Guide

INBIOPYR is a cross-border project aimed at developing biological indicators of the effects of climate change on wildlife in the Pyrenees. It focuses on the use of observations provided by volunteers on various citizen science platforms, which are brought together under FAUNAPYR – a joint database of wildlife sightings across the entire mountain range that allows these to be viewed via a single portal.

Climate change adaptation in the management of water resources in the Pyrenees. Scientific reports of the PIRAGUA project, vol. 2

The document analyses the impacts of climate change on water resources in the Pyrenees, including changes in river flows, snow cover and water availability. It presents methodologies and scientific results to assess vulnerability and associated risks. It also proposes adaptation measures to improve sustainable water management in the context of climate change.

Characterisation of the current water resources of the Pyrenees and future scenarios. Scientific reports of the PIRAGUA project, vol. 1

This work presents the results of the PIRAGUA project (2018–2021), which focused on assessing the hydrological cycle and water resources of the Pyrenees in the context of climate change. It integrates and analyses hydrological data and develops indicators and simulation models to study trends and the water balance. It also projects future scenarios to assess the impact of climate change on water resources throughout the 21st century.
