Good ecological restoration practices in the Pyrenees
A seminar organized by the Conservatoire Botanique National des Pyrénées et de Midi-Pyrénées in collaboration with the Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory.
Date: 26 - 27 June 2019
Regions: Gavarnie-Gèdre / Bagnères-de-Bigorre
Human and economic activities in the Pyrenees are associated with management activities whose development may have negative impacts on the natural environment (earthworks for the development of a ski slope, maintenance and widening of roads, etc.). Ecological restoration of mountain meadows and meadows, carried out with plants of local origin, makes it possible to establish a vegetation cover adapted to the altitude conditions. The reconstituted environments are then more resilient to climatic risks, particularly exacerbated in the mountains (storms, frosts, droughts...). By recreating stable environments, with vegetation adapted to local conditions, these practices contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change. Since 2003, the Ecovars programme has been supporting developers in their revegetation projects. The Pyrenees Climate Change Observatory (OPCC) is a transboundary territorial cooperation initiative of the Pyrenees Working Community (CTP) whose objective is to monitor and understand the effects of climate change in the Pyrenees in order to help the territory adapt to its impacts.
