The Alliance of Pyrenean Soils (ASPir) Conference has called on organisations, companies and institutions to contact the Alliance and share projects related to soil in the Pyrenean region, with the aim of strengthening cooperation for the protection of Pyrenean soils (integration into ASPir). This message was one of the highlights of the 8th ASPir Assembly, held in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 22 October 2025, with the participation of representatives from more than 40 entities.
At this annual meeting, Alliance members reviewed ongoing initiatives and collaborations, in particular the Action Plan developed as part of the SOLPYR project, which will serve as the basis for defining ASPir's future roadmap. Collaboration with the Alpine Alliance was also highlighted and the latest news on the European Soil Health Directive was shared, particularly with regard to its assessment indicators and possible implications for mountain areas.
The Pyrenean Lands Congress was part of the Forum, among the actions of the European SOLPYR project, which aims to promote the protection and sustainable management of Pyrenean soils. This cross-border project aims to strengthen knowledge, awareness and cooperation between the different Pyrenean regions, encouraging joint management strategies at the international level.
The Forum brought together experts and institutional representatives active in research, forest management, agriculture, livestock farming and public administration. During the sessions, the progress of the project was analysed, experiences in soil governance and conservation were shared, and an Action Plan for the Pyrenees was drawn up. This plan will define a coordinated cross-border strategy based on the results of seven participatory workshops.
At the same time, the project is making progress in harmonising soil mapping and diagnostic methodologies, as well as in developing a common map for classifying Pyrenean soils, in order to identify vulnerable areas and guide cross-border conservation decisions. A public awareness programme has also been launched, including educational materials and informative trails aimed at raising awareness among citizens (hikers, farmers, managers and visitors) of the importance of soil in the sustainability of the Pyrenees.
The SOLPYR project (EFA045/01) is supported by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Spain–France programme –Andorra programme (POCTEFA 2021-2027), which funds cross-border cooperation initiatives in the fields of research, management and environmental awareness, thus ensuring a coordinated and effective approach across the entire Pyrenean territory.
