The indicator increased by 8.74% over the 2005-2014 period, in relation with the launch and deployment of adaptation measures and actions throughout Catalonia.

On the 13th of May 2019, the Director General for Environmental Quality Mercè Rius presented the revision of the Global Indicator of Adaptation (GIA) to the impacts of climate change in Catalonia. This updated value of the indicator extends and improves the one published by the Catalan Climate Change Office (CCCO) in November 2014, which for the first time established an indicator to monitor the evolution of Catalonia's capacity to adapt to the impacts of global warming.

The update, extension and improvement of the GIA allow us to observe a moderately positive evolution of adaptation to the impacts of climate change over the past 10 years. Concretely, the indicator increased by 8.74% over the period 2005-2014, in line with the deployment of adaptation measures throughout Catalonia. In addition, the GIA is now more robust thanks to the integration of 42 sectorial indicators, 13 more than in 2014.

In recent years, public adaptation policy in Catalonia has been marked by four important milestones: the publication of the third report on climate change in Catalonia; the monitoring and evaluation document of the Catalan Strategy for Adaptating to Climate Change (CSACC, 2013-2020), the Climate Change Act and the completion of the Life MEDACC project "Adapting the Mediterranean to Climate Change". These milestones have led to the expansion of Catalonia's knowledge of adaptation and have confirmed that the impacts of climate change are a reality. Adaptation to climate change has also been integrated into normative sectorial public policies. The OCCC considers that these elements, as well as the progress of the various adaptation instruments at the municipal and supra-municipal levels developed by the regional councils, the metropolitan area and the councils, have made it possible to revise the overall adaptation indicator presented on the 13th of May 2019.
