The kick off meeting of the strategic climate action project for the Pyrenees LIFE PYRENEES4CLIMA will take place on 23 and 24 January in Jaca.

  • 16 Jan

The Working Community of the Pyrenees (CTP), through the Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory (OPCC), leads the PYRENEES4CLIMA project in which 39 other Spanish, French and Andorran entities participate as partners, seeking, through cooperation, to increase resilience in the Pyrenees through the implementation of specific measures and actions for adaptation to Climate Change in a wide range of areas. The PYRENEES4CLIMA project "Towards a climate resilient cross-border mountain community in the Pyrenees" was approved in June 2023 by the European LIFE Programme and, after the preparation phase, the implementation phase of the actions is now starting. The total budget of the project is almost 20 million euros and the timeframe for its development is seven and a half years, which means that it will end in 2030.
The launch meeting of the project will take place on 23 and 24 January at the Palacio de Congresos in Jaca. The event will be attended by institutional representatives from the seven member territories of the CTP: Nouvelle Aquitaine, Occitanie, Euskadi, Navarra, Aragon, Catalonia and Andorra, together with the Secretary General of the CTP, the Mayor of Jaca and the Regional Minister for the Environment and Tourism of the Government of Aragon. These territories actively participated in the design of the Pyrenean Climate Change Strategy (EPiCC), whose implementation is the main objective of the project that is now being launched. The EPiCC is the first European cross-border climate change strategy, specifically designed for a mountain bioregion.
During the two-day event, round tables will be organised to concretise and discuss how to innovate and implement cross-cutting actions that will enable real progress in cross-border climate action and climate policies. In addition, different parallel working groups will be organised related to the different technical work packages: climate; resilient natural spaces; mountain economy and population; and adapted territory. Internal governance and organisation will also be addressed.
This kick-off meeting will be a fundamental milestone in the operational and political launch of this emblematic project due to its territorial, economic and temporal dimension. A moment of encounter in which the great territorial and multidisciplinary diversity of entities involved in the project will have the opportunity to seek synergies between the different actions and lay the foundations for almost 8 years in which to catalyse climate action in the mountain range through cross-border cooperation.
