Impact of Climate Change on the Forests of the Pyrenees: OPCC Joins the POCTEFA "SANA SILVA" Project to Tackle Forest Health Challenges

  • 30 Jun

The forests of the Pyrenees, key ecosystems for climate change mitigation through carbon storage, water flow regulation, and biodiversity maintenance, are experiencing a significant increase in their vulnerability due to the accelerated effects of climate change. Phenomena such as dieback, defoliation, and pest proliferation are weakening the health of these forests, which could have severe consequences for both natural ecosystems and local forestry activities.

In response to this situation, cross-border cooperation emerges as an essential tool to address these problems in an integrated manner. In this context, the OPCC is joining the POCTEFA "SANA SILVA" project, a key initiative to tackle the climate change challenges facing the Pyrenean forests through a strategy of cross-border cooperation. With the participation of France, Spain, and Andorra, the project aims to implement key actions to solve shared problems and protect these vital ecosystems.

🔬 Project Objectives: Measure, Adapt, and Transfer Knowledge

  • Develop a cross-border cooperation strategy to address the climate change challenges in the Pyrenean forests.
  • Measure the effects of climate change on forest species of high economic and environmental value, analyzing historical defoliation data.
  • Develop an adaptation strategy for the most vulnerable forest areas, mitigating the impacts of climate change.
  • Transfer knowledge to key forestry sector actors to ensure the effective implementation of best practices.

🔗 The Role of OPCC: Facilitating Knowledge Exchange and Cross-Border Cooperation

The OPCC plays a fundamental role in the SANA SILVA project, particularly in communication, dissemination, and capitalizing on results. Through activities such as events, training sessions, and field visits, the OPCC will facilitate the transfer of knowledge on forest health. A cross-border network of experts will also be fostered, enabling continuous information exchange and best practice sharing among key forest management actors in the Pyrenees. Through its Geoportal and other communication channels, the OPCC will be responsible for disseminating the project’s results, ensuring that the generated knowledge reaches all those involved in forest protection. A collaborative and innovative effort that will make a difference in the adaptation of Pyrenean forests to climate change. 🌍

🤝 A More Resilient Future for the Pyrenean Forests. This collaborative approach, based on integrating existing tools and systems, ensures that the adopted solutions will be sustainable and long-lasting, contributing to the effective and long-term adaptation of Pyrenean forests to climate change.
