THE PYRENEAN OBSERVATORY FOR CLIMATE CHANGE PRESENTS ITS ADAPYR PROJECT IN A VIRTUAL MEETING BETWEEN EXPERTS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC
The Pyrenean Observatory for Climate Change will meet with the public on 9 July from 4 to 5.30 p.m. for a virtual meeting with climate change experts. 1h30 of talks during which the ADAPYR project will be presented, with the aim of increasing the value of observations and experience in the field.
PROJECTS TO ANALYSE CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE PYRENEES
Initiated by the Pyrenees Working Community, the Pyrenees Observatory for Climate Change is a POCTEFA project that was set up in 2010 with the aim of better understanding the phenomenon of climate change. The OPCC has among its members several public and private actors from France, Spain and Andorra. Together, they share their knowledge and work on the impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change in various fields such as flora, fauna, lakes and peatlands, glaciers, forests, water, natural hazards and the study of climate itself.
At its third international colloquium on climate change last October, the results of the OPCC 2 project were presented to the experts by the members of the OPCC and associated research institutes. This multidisciplinary programme, spread over three years, centralised all the projects aimed at studying and understanding the evolution of the climate in the Pyrenees in order to reduce its harmful effects by proposing adaptation solutions.
OPCC 2 highlighted several alarming data. Among them, the disappearance of 50% of Pyrenean glaciers in the last 35 years, or the fact that 50% of the measuring stations of the Pyrenean rivers have been affected by a reduction in their average flow.
The continuation of the OPCC 2 project is the ADAPYR project, programmed within the framework of the third call for projects of the Interreg V-A territorial cooperation programme (POCTEFA 2014-2020).
It is based on three axes:
To observe, identify, analyse and contribute to the scientific knowledge on climate change
Transfer, give visibility to the Pyrenees to facilitate international cooperation on climate issues
Capitalize, develop tools and methods to simplify decision making
Ultimately, the project aims to increase the value of field observations and expertise in order to put the fight against global warming at the centre.
A MEETING TO ANALYSE THE CHALLENGES OF CLIMATE ISSUES
On 9 July 2020, from 4pm to 5.30pm, the general public is invited to participate in a video conference with climate change experts from OPCC partner organisations.
During this virtual meeting, participants will be able to interact with:
